私は電気自動車に乗り始めて１２年になりますが、そのことを誇りに思っています。私が最初に乗った電気自動車はSolectrica Force。 １９９９年に作られた電気自動車で、鉛蓄電池をエネルギー源にしたものです。それからの１２年間で、電気自動車をどう使えばより効率的に走れるかを学んできたのです。
ユーザーによって差はあるでしょうが、私の場合の使用電力（キロワット時）あたりの走行距離数（１マイル＝約１．６ｋｍ）は次の通り。
2002 トヨタ自動車 Rav4EV 4.6 miles/kWh
2011 日産 LEAF 5.7 miles/kWh
2012 トヨタ自動車 Rav4EV 5.1 miles/kWh
2012 テスラ Model S 3.1 miles/kWh
テスラのモデルSで単位電力あたりの走行距離が下がっているのは心理的なものです。モデルSはこれまでの電気自動車とは比較にならない大容量のバッテリーを搭載しているため、少々電気を使っても大丈夫だと思ってしまうのです。実際モデルSは格好いいし、速いんですよ。
２００２年に買ったトヨタ製のRav4EV（ニッケル水素電池式）や、２年前に買った日産LEAF(リチウムイオン電池式）を使って自宅からおよそ１６０キロ離れたナパバレーによく出かけています。ここはワインの名産地なんです。電池切れが心配じゃないかと思うかもしれませんが、あちこちに充電施設があるため、まったく問題なし。ただし、アメリカには様々なタイプの２２０ボルトや２４０ボルトの充電用プラグがあります。そこで私も電気自動車にどんな形の充電口にも対応できるようにたくさん充電用コードを積んでいます。http://waidy.com/EVSEextenders/
２０１２年に買ったトヨタの新型Rav4EV(リチウムイオン電池式）の場合、一回の充電で走った最長の走行距離は１５８マイル（約２５３ｋｍ）でした。でもまだ少し電池が残っていましたよ。
息子のダレンは先日、テスラの電気自動車「モデルS」に乗ってロサンゼルスまで片道４００マイル（６４０ｋｍ）のドライブしました。行きと帰りにそれぞれ２回充電したそうです。充電時間は２０分か２５分でした。以下はダレンのメモです。
「サンフランシスコからロサンゼルスまで、モデルSに乗って４００マイル（６４０ｋｍ）以上の旅。２０１３年１月９日。
ドライブはすごかった。いかに素晴らしかったか語るのが難しいよ。心配はハリスランチの充電施設に充電器が１台しかないことだったけど、往復ともにほかに充電している人はいなかったんだ。サンフランシスコを出発した時、電池の残量計は２６５マイル（約４２４ｋｍ）だった。出発してハリスランチに着いたとき、残量計は６６マイル（約１０５ｋｍ）分しか残っていなかった。そこで最初の充電を２０分行った。ハリスランチを出発する時、残量計は１６０マイル（約２５６ｋｍ）まで回復していた。テジョンランチに到着した時、残量は２０マイル（３２ｋｍ）分だった。そこで３０分充電してロサンゼルスに向かった。この時、残量計は１７０ポイントにUPしていた。一部を除いて平均速度は時速７０マイル（時速１１２ｋｍ）。

'I am a proud EV driver for over 12 years. My first EV was a 1999 Solectrica Force a lead acid battery powered EV. During the past 12 years of EV driving, we learn to drive efficiently with hypermiling technique.
Here is my miles/kWh (your milage may vary):
2002 Rav4EV 4.6 miles/kWh
2011 LEAF 5.7 miles/kWh
2012 Rav4EV 5.1 miles/kWh
2012 Model S 3.1 miles/kWh [part of the reason why this is so low is "psychological". In the driver's mind: "oh, I have lots of free energy and don't have to worry about range; and WOW the S is cool and fast."]
I have been taken frequent trips in both of my 2002 Rav4EV and 2011 LEAF to the wine country in Napa Valley (over 100 miles from my home). Refuels were never a problem because there is electricity every where. I have made and carry this list of charging cords with me because there are many different kinds of 220/240 plugs in US. My conversion kits has all the different kind of 220/240 outlets used in US. As for the 2012 Rav4EV, the longest distance that was driven in one charge was 158 miles (after 158 miles, there are still couple of energy bars left).
My son Darren took the Model S to Los Angeles couple weeks ago. He did two refuels each way and spent 20-25 minutes in each refuel.
Darren went to Boston College for his undergrad degrees double majors in Computer Science and Mathematics. He did his graduate work in Computer Science concentrate in Artificial Intelligent at UCLA. Darren is currently a Software Developer working in San Francisco. ’

The drive was epic. I can't believe how awesome it was! Iwas mostly concerned with the single supercharger stationat Harris Ranch, but there was no one there both ways. Istarted with a Max Range charge in San Francisco (265rated range). Got to Harris Ranch with 66 miles left andcharged for 20 minutes and left the ranch with 160 range.Got to Tejon Ranch with 20 miles. I was definitely cutting itclose. Charged for 30 minutes and headed to LA with 170miles range. I averaged 70 mph the whole way except
going over the Grapevine.
SF to Harris Ranch = 185 miles
