地域の子供に無料の作文教育を 子供の教育を変えたサンフランシスコの ”826 Valencia” , One-on-one tutoring can help students make great leaps in their writing skills and confidence.
アメリカのサンフランシスコに"826 Valencia"という名前の寺子屋があります。変わった名前と思われるかもしれませんが、これは住所を名前に採用したわけです。住所がわかりやすいですね。ここではボランティアの教え手が６歳から１８歳までの子供たちに放課後、無料で教育をしています。教えているのは作文だけ。子供たちにモノを書くコツを教えて、書く喜びを知ってもらおうというのです。教え子たちが書いた本も販売されています。
２００２年にこの826 Valenciaが設立された当初はボランティアの方が子供より多かったそうです。しかし、その後どんどん子供が集まり、今ではなんと年間の生徒数が６０００人を越え、ボランティアも１７００人に上るそうです。さらにニューヨーク、ボストン、ロサンゼルス、ワシントンＤＣなどでも同じ寺子屋が開かれ、現在全米で７か所、生徒数は延べ３２０００人、ボランティアも５千人に上っています。８２６Valenciaはどのようなことを具体的にしているのか、教育プログラムと広報を担当しているモリ―・パレント（Molly Parent）さんにインタビューしました。
"826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. "( from its website )
It was established in 2002 in the store at 826 Valencia in San Francisco because it was an area for retail shops.
It was quite a success and today there are 7 places for free education ,including L.A., New York and Boston. Number of students are more than 32000 all included , and volunteer tutors are more than 5000.Why did this movement of "826 Velencia" develop in 15 years? I interviewed Molly Parent of 826 Valencia.

1) There are a lot of subjects, for example mathematics , but why you focus on English composition ?
Ｑ 普通は数学など教科はたくさんありますが、ここではなぜ（英語の）作文に絞っているのですか？
We believe that writing is a crucial skill and tool for self-expression, critical thinking, and creativity. We also know that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success, and that the ability to read and write clearly will open doors to opportunity throughout one's life. And we see that one-on-one tutoring can help students make great leaps in their writing skills and confidence.
私たちはものを書くことは必要不可欠の技術であり、また自己表現、批判的思考、そして創造性のための道具であると思っているのです。さらに、高度の書く技術は将来成功するために欠かせないものであることを知っています。読んだり書いたりする能力があれば一生を通して様々なチャンスを得ることが可能となります。私たちはマンツーマンで作文を指導することこそ子供たちの作文力を飛躍的に伸びさせ、大きな自信を与えることにつながると思っています。
2) What kind of children take part in this project ? I am glad if you tell me about some of your experiences . What situation do these children in at school and at home ?
Ｑ ８２６Valenciaで作文指導を受けに来る生徒はどんな子供たちなのでしょうか？あなたのご経験を交えて教えていただければ嬉しく思います。子供たちは学校や家庭でどのような状況にいるのでしょう？
Our students are predominantly low-income youth of color, ages 6-18. The vast majority of them attend public school, and many of them speak English as their second language or are newcomers to this country learning English for the first time. They come from a range of backgrounds, with a variety of circumstances in their home lives. We believe in meeting each student where they are, and providing the one-on-one support that helps all students thrive.
生徒は主に有色人種で貧困世帯の子供たちです。年齢は６歳から１８歳です。大半は公立学校に通う生徒たちです。そして多くの生徒にとって英語は第二言語に当たります。あるいは外国から流入したばかりで、英語はこれから初めて学習する子供たちもいます。子供たちの家庭環境は本当に様々で多岐にわたる背景があります。私たちの方針は生徒の一人一人にあった指導をすることであり、マンツーマンでの作文指導こそすべての生徒の力をつけることができる方法だと思っています。
３) Please talk about the volunteers. What type of people takes part in ? Professional writers ,too ?
Ｑ ボランティアの作文指導員について教えてください。どんなタイプの人々が参加していますか？プロの作家もいるのですか？
Our volunteers also come from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Some are published authors, some are young working professionals, some are retired educators, and everything in between. What they all have in common is a desire to help young people succeed and a belief that all of our students' stories matter. We provide tutor training through an extensive orientation and opportunities throughout the year to hone their skills.They're an amazing, dedicated group of people, and we couldn't do our work without them.
ボランティアもまた実に様々なバックグランドや人生経験を持っています。ある人は本の著者であり、ある人は若い職業人、ある人は退職した教師、多くの人がそういった人々です。みんなが共通して持っているものは若い人たちに人生で成功して欲しいという願いです。そして、子どもたち一人一人の物語が大切なんだという信念です。私たちは教え手になる人たちに広範囲の方向づけをトレーニングの中で与えます。そして、教え手自身にもまたさらに自分自身の作文能力を磨く機会を１年を通じて私たちは提供するのです。彼らは素晴らしく、熱意のある人々です。私たちはこれらのボランティアがいなければ何もできないのです。

１、We know the best way to help students learn is to sit down beside then and give them the individualized attention of a caring adult. We train and organize hundreds of volunteers each year to give students this one -on-one attention, helping teachers do their difficult jobs more effectively and giving students the support they need to thrive.

２、We take a partnership role ,rather than a vendor role in developing our programs. Through collaborations with teachers, administrators , parents ,and partner organizations , we create learning opportunities that are responsive to and aligned with work that is already happening in our schools and communities.
２ 私たちは教育システムを発展させる上で自己完結した商品の売り手のようなやり方ではなく、パートナーシップ方式を重視しています。教師や教育行政官、親、そしてパートナーを組んでいる様々な組織と協力関係を築き、地域の現実に即した教育の場を作り上げ、学校やコミュニティですでに教えている事柄と重複することがないようにしています。
３、We honor and amplify our students'voices by professionally publishing their writing and giving it an audience. Whether the end product is a performance , a pod cast ,a magazine ,or beautiful book, this encourages students to work hard and feel proud of an authentic end product and gives them a unique sense of ownership over the writing process.
３ 私たちは生徒の声に誇りを持ち、その声を広く伝えるために、彼らの作文を出版ルートに乗せたり、聴衆を得ることができるようにしています。最終的に朗読会になるか、ポッドキャストになるか、雑誌の掲載になるか、美しい本にまとめられるかは様々ですが、それによって、生徒たちが作文に真剣に取り組み、立派に仕上がった作品に誇りが持てるようになります。また作文の道のりの最後にそれを所有する独特の感覚を得ることができるようになります。
４、All of our learning spaces and publications are designed to transport students to other worlds and inspire creativity. This spirit of wonder is most notably embodied in the store fronts that serve as portals to our centers. At Pirate Supply store on Valencia street we purvey ,yes ,supplies for pirates.,king Carl's Emporium, the new store front to our Tenderloin center ,supplies tools for exploration of worlds both real and imaginary. Both stores also sell the many publications of our students' writing.Their proceeds go right back into our program ,creating and supporting beautiful spaces for kids to write ,wonder ,and dream.
４、 私たちの提供する学習の場と出版は生徒たちを異世界に導き、創造性をかきたてるように工夫されています。この不思議さに満ちた精神は私たちの建物の正面の構えに象徴されています。実はバレンシア通りのこの建物は海賊ショップになっています。そうなんです、実際に海賊関係のグッズを扱っている店なんです。また新たに増設したカール王の店ではリアルであれ想像の世界であれ、冒険のためのグッズを扱っています。これら２つの店では私たちが指導した生徒たちの作文を載せた本も売られています。その収益は私たちの教育プログラムに還元され、子どもたちのための美しく、不思議と夢に満ちた空間を作り維持することにつながるのです。
