カイロの猫たちの記録（ Cat in Cairo " The Beast ") Heather Hermit
エジプトと言えば古代から猫を飼いならした土地で、そもそも猫を家畜化したのはエジプトと言われています。そんな猫の本場、エジプトで猫を飼っているロシア人デザイナーのヘザー・ハーミットさんは自分が飼っている猫の写真記録をつけてきました。現在、2匹の雌猫と暮らしています。
■カイロの猫たちの記録 「ザ・ビースト」（The Beast )
The Beast is a Thai cat, she is 3 years old, I took her from one of the Cairo pet shops, she was very very sick and it took me a long time to cure her. She is very thoughtful and calm, but not friendly, she doesn't like people and enjoys being on her own.
ザ・ビーストはタイ産の猫です。3歳になります。カイロのペット店の１つで買ったのです。ザ・ビーストはかなり病弱で、それを治療するのにかなりの時間が必要でした。ザ・ビーストはとても思慮深く、静かです。しかし、親しみやすいとは言えません。人にかまわれるのを好まず、一人でいるのが好きなのです。
The other cat (small one) is Sekhmet, she is only 6 months. I took her from the shelter for cats in Cairo because nobody wanted to adopt her saying she is too ugly. She is very playful and always hungry. She can eat as much food as you give her．
飼っているもう1匹の猫はセクメトです。まだ生後6か月に過ぎません。カイロの猫のシェルターからもらい受けました。というのは見た目が醜いために誰からも引き取ってもらえなかったのです。セクメトはいつも腹を減らしていて、餌を与えると必ず全部食べてしまうんです。
First the Beast hated her and was hiding all the time from her showing how she was disgusted by the new cat and her bad manners. Or sometimes they were fighting. But after a couple of months they started getting along quite well. The Beast still hates Sekhmet, but sometimes they play together. Or Sekhmet steals her food. Or she comes and washes the Beast with her tongue, which the Beast finds very annoying．
最初はザ・ビーストはセクメトのことをとても嫌がっていて、いつも避けていました。そして、いかにセクメットとそのマナーの悪さを嫌っているかということを示していたのです。時には喧嘩もしていました。しかし、数か月もすると、少し仲が良くなったのです。それでもまだザ・ビーストはセクメトを嫌っているのですが、しばしば一緒に遊ぶこともあります。セクメトがザ・ビーストの餌を横取りすることもあります。またセクメトがザ・ビーストを舌で掃除することもあります。ザ・ビーストとしては非常に困惑する瞬間です。
