カイロの猫たちの記録（ Cat in Cairo " The Beast ") 子猫ラムセスの不安 Heather Hermit
エジプトのカイロで暮らしているロシア人のデザイナー、ヘザー・ハーミット（Heather Hermit)さんは路上で死にかけた猫を見つけました。その子猫にしばらくエサと薬を与えた後、動物病院に連れて行きました。ラムセスという高貴な名前をもらった子猫の動物病院での治療が始まりました。以下は、彼女の記録です。
I visited Ramses the cat yesterday in the clinic. He is getting better, eating well, his paw which was wounded is now better. He still has ringworm all over the body, but the fur started growing. He is kept in a separate cage, but when he is healthy he will join the other cats there, will play and socialize with them.
私は再び動物病院に出かけ、子猫のラムセスを訪ねた。ラムセスは健康を取り戻しつつあった。よく食べるし、怪我をしていた前足も今ではよくなっていた。確かに今も皮膚病は体中に残っているのだが、しかし、毛が生え始めているのだ。ラムセスの檻は他の猫たちから隔てられているが、状態が良くなったら動物病院に収容されている他の猫たちと一緒になって遊んだり、仲間になったりするだろう。
Although he is now safe and treated well still he seems to be very depressed and frightened. He sits all day in the cage looking at the wall. And he looks quite unhappy. The doctor says that Ramses needs some time to understand he is not in the street anymore and will not be starving and treated badly by humans anymore.
しかし、子猫のラムセスがいかによく手当てを受けているとしても、未だにラムセスはとてもふさぎ込んでおり、おびえているように見える。ラムセスは一日中、檻の中に座っていて壁をじっと見ているのだ。その様子はとても不幸に思える。動物病院の獣医はラムセスが今では町の通りにいるのではなく、もう飢えることもないし、人間にひどく扱われることもないのだということを理解するにはもう少し時間が必要だろうと言う。
I am kind of worried about Ramses and his psychological state, but hope that good treatment and good food will make him feel better after some time. When he will be healthy we will prepare him to travel to Russia to his new home.
私はラムセスの心のあり様が心配だが、よい治療とよい食料によってラムセスはいつかは居心地がよくなることを希望する。いつかラムセスが健康になったら、私はロシアに連れていきたいと思っている。そこに彼の新しい住まいがあるのだ。
※ラムセス （ Ramses ）
古代エジプト王朝時代の王たちが多数名乗った名前であり、太陽神ラー（Ra）が生命を与えた者、という意味がある。
